Brain Health
and Dementia

Everything you need to know about understanding and supporting your cognitive health.

What is Brain Health?

Brain health refers to how well your brain works in everyday life. A healthy brain helps you:

Think clearly
Concentrate
Learn and remember
Plan and solve problems
Regulate emotions and cope with stress
Maintain independence
Stay engaged in daily life
Support mobility and physical health
Experience a good quality of life

Brain health exists on a continuum. It changes across life — and it can be supported.

What is dementia?

Dementia is a group of conditions that affect how the brain works over time.

It can affect:

Memory
Thinking
Communication
Behaviour
Daily Activities
Dementia is not a normal part of ageing.

The most common types include:

Alzheimer’s disease
Vascular dementia
Lewy body dementia
Frontotemporal dementia

Dementia can occur before the age of 65. This is called Young Onset Dementia (YOD). Rare genetic conditions can also cause Childhood Dementia.

If you are worried about changes in memory or thinking, speak to your GP or health professional.

How we can reduce dementia risk

Evidence suggests that up to 45% of dementia cases worldwide are estimated to be associated with modifiable risk factors.

These modifiable factors are those that can be changed. They fall into three main areas. Click on an image or icon to explore a topic.

Some of these factors can be influenced at the individual level. Others require broader community and policy action. This resource focuses particularly on areas where you can take practical steps, while also acknowledging the wider influences on brain health.

You may reduce
your risk

Although there are no guarantees, you may reduce your risk of experiencing dementia. You can also improve your quality of life if you are living with dementia, by modifying Healthy Daily Habits and staying on top of any Health Checks and Medical Care that you may have.
